If you’ve been around people with dogs there would be a lot of talk about raising a puppy to be the perfect dog. It’s a dream we all want but the question is…does a perfect dog exist?
Just as humans are not perfect, a perfect dog does not exist.
However, there are some amazing people out there, and there are some amazing dogs too. So, what’s the trick?
Here Is My Best Advice
Before signing up your new puppy to Puppy School to learn the basics, such as commando crawl, roly-polies, and high-fives, ask yourself, is this the way a dream dog behaves.
Is my dream dog a performing monkey whom I can command to do tricks when visitors come around in order to impress people.
The chances are if you focused too much on basic tricks for your puppy the next thing the dog owner need to do is warn the visitors “Don’t go near his food bowl when he’s eating”…”Careful when you pat him…don’t get near his head”…and ” Keep the children away from his toys…!”
It’s Crazy, isn’t it?
We focus so much on commands of ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ we never think about the really important stuff until it’s too late.
Want To Know Why?
The fact is, most dog trainers are stuck doing what everyone is doing…
They teach the same old tricks, sit, down, and stay!
It’s like a flock of sheep, everyone following each other and nobody asks WHY?
Think about this…has a dog ever been put down to sleep (euthanized) because they didn’t do a proper sit? Or because their down command was a bit slow? Or because they had a poor stay? No! Of course not…nobody cares about that stuff.
That’s what we all learn at puppy school! WHY?
But What About Aggression?
Sadly, more dogs are put to sleep because of aggression, barking, growling, and biting than any other reason. Dogs become aggressive to children, their owners, and strangers while this all could have been avoided.
There’s nothing more than a dangerous out-of-control dog, pulling you around on the leash, and ignore you when they’re off the leash. Then there’s the danger of your dog approaching a busy highway and other dogs.
Yet, very few dog trainers show you how to prevent this, because very few actually understand this themselves!
What Behavior Should A Well Trained Puppy Have?
For most people the dream of a perfect dog is the following 5 important behaviors:
1. To be calm around other animals including dogs
2. Friendly around people including children
3. To be relaxed and obedient around the home
4. Be an amazing dog when called at the park
5. Well behaved when walking on the leash in public
Amazingly enough, this is not difficult to learn.
